The Cosmic Cow
In Hinduism, the cow is considered one of the most sacred animals - representingdivine and natural beneficence, nurturing qualities, and the embodiment of nonviolence and gentleness. She is called Kamadhenu - the wish-fulfilling cow, thecosmic mother who gives without condition. In ancient Egypt, the goddess Hathor was depicted with the head of a cow or with cow's ears - representing love, motherhood, and joy.
In Norse tradition, the cow's udders were said to secrete the four rivers of power at the foundation of their cosmology. In Celtic culture, the cow was sacred to the goddess Brigid - representing spring, fertility, health, and healing.

The Future of Our Relationship with Cattle
There are 1.58 billion cattle on Earth. One for every five people. They account for more than 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions - primarily through methane, a gas that warms the planet at twenty times the rate of CO₂. This is not a fact to be avoided. It is a fact that demands a response: every hide we use is a byproduct of an animal already in the food chain. No additional animal. No additional land. No additional methane. The skin becomes armour. The life is honoured in full.
Biochar from manure - cow dung is pyrolysed (heated without oxygen) into biochar, a stable form of carbon that can be buried in soil and locked away for hundreds to thousands of years. One tonne of biochar sequesters roughly 2–3 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. There are farms doing this at scale. Composted manure as soil amendment - properly composted cow manure applied to agricultural soil increases organic matter, which feeds microbial life that draws carbon down from the atmosphere into the ground. Healthy, carbon-rich soil can sequester significant amounts of CO₂ annually per hectare. Anaerobic digestion / biogas - manure fed into digesters produces methane as biogas, captured and used as clean energy rather than released into the atmosphere, and leaves behind digestate - a nutrient-rich byproduct that, when applied to soil, builds organic matter and sequesters carbon.
Holistic planned grazing - when cattle are moved in concentrated herds across grassland in a planned rotation, mimicking the movement of wild herds, the hoof action aerates soil, the dung fertilises it, and deep-rooted grasses are stimulated. Grassland managed this way can become a significant carbon sink. Allan Savory's work on this has been both celebrated and scrutinized; the science is still being debated, the principle is biologically sound. The industrial feedlot needs changing. Not the cow.
