Amarone

In the hills of Valpolicella, north of Verona, the harvest is not pressed but laid to rest. Vine ripened bunches wither on racks for near 120 days, losing 40% of their weight until the sun in them concentrates. The wine ferments dry, yet reads of ripe raisin and warmth, sweetness sensed rather than sugared. What remains is sun soaked wisdom held in fruit long after the sun has set, gathering the earth’s and the sun’s intelligence in one mature, amber infused hue.

The wine itself is young, and born of a mistake. For centuries these dried grapes made only the sweet Recioto. Around 1936 a cask was left to ferment too long, the sugar ran out, and what should have been a spoiled batch emerged dry, deep and profound. They called it Amarone, the great bitter.

The tone is aged wine held to candlelight, the garnet that deepens to amber at the edge, a warmth the still life masters prized against dark grounds, Velázquez and Zurbarán among them. Amber carries the same hue and a far older story: fossil tree resin, some pieces 40 million years old, traded along the Amber Road from the Baltic to the Mediterranean since the Bronze Age, prized by Rome above many gems.

This is the root register. Muladhara, base of the spine, element earth, seat of stability, security and belonging, sounded at 396 Hz, the lowest and slowest of the body’s centres, the ground note the others build on. Worn against the body, that low register radiates outward through the aura as steadiness, a field of quiet assurance.

Worn, it settles you. Grounded, connected to the earth, fuelled by the sun. Secure, sensual, wise. You know who you are.
