Historical significance

The oldest known domesticated habanero was found in a cave in Peru and dated to 6500 BC - 8,500 years ago.

To the ancient Mesoamerican civilisations, chili peppers were sacred plants with divine qualities. Their fiery heat was associated with supernatural power - considered a manifestation of the divine. They were believed to ward off evil spirits, cleanse the body of negative energies, and act as a conduit between humans and the gods. They were offered during religious ceremonies and used in ritualistic foods and beverages. The heat was thought to drive out illness, awaken spiritual awareness, and strengthen the connection between the human and the divine realm.

The Aztecs mixed habanero into a thick brew of cacao, cornmeal, and spice - a concoction they believed was befitting of the gods themselves.
