Dragon fruit

Dragonfruit is the color the moon makes. Its parent cactus carries the name Selenicereus, for Selene, the moon goddess, and its flower opens for one night alone. By morning the bloom has birthed a fruit whose flesh runs magenta.

The pigment is betacyanin, a rare class shared with beet and amaranth, held by only a small circle of plants on earth.

The hue lives past the rainbow’s edge, a marriage the eye performs. Red arrives near 430 terahertz at the long end of the visible, violet near 750 at the short, and dragonfruit is born where the two meet in perception. It carries the slowest and swiftest light at once. Chromatherapy seats it at the crown and tunes it to 963 hertz, the highest of the solfeggio tones.

Dragonfruit medicine holds vitamin C, magnesium, iron, and a prebiotic fibre that feeds the gut’s own flora. Its black seeds are dense with omega fatty acids. Traditional practice across Southeast Asia and Mesoamerica has long turned to dragonfruit as a cooling food, taken to steady the blood and restore the skin. The colour you wear and the colour you eat are the same molecule.

Aztec and Mixtec dyers drew cochineal from the nopal cactus and kept that fire for the robes of kings and gods. Spain carried it home as treasure ranked beside silver, and it clothed cardinals for three centuries.

Dragonfruit acts on the spirit as arrival. This vibrant colorway energizes the crown, quickens the blood, celebrates this moment. It is the colour of being seen, a declaration of electricity and joy.

Historical significance

In Homer’s Odyssey, 8th century BC, pink appears as the rosy colour of dawn, “rosy-fingered dawn”, the moment the world opens again after darkness.

During the Renaissance, Raphael’s Madonna of the Pinks used this colour to signify a spiritual bond between mother and child, the most sacred love rendered in the warmest hue.

In Japanese culture, pink is tied to cherry blossoms, evoking beauty, renewal, and the poignant transience of life at its most exquisite

In India, pink represents celebration and hospitality.

In West African Kente tradition, pink symbolizes the feminine essence of life, a gentle counterpart to red’s potency.

This color has always been worn by those unafraid to be open.
